At the Abbey of Our Lady of Latroun in Israel, a member of the community has been deeply involved in caring for his brother. Here is a brief account of the accident and his recovery, including the financial and medical support he received.

Background

Following a fall in a lift in early 2026, Brother Olivier (aged 80), a monk at Latroun Abbey (Israel), fractured his femur. Brother Athanase (Head of the IMS Group) quickly contacted his IMS Section and Sheba Hospital, near Tel Aviv, where Brother Olivier was admitted. The Brother then underwent major surgery, followed by post-operative care.

IMS Financial Assistance and Social Fund

As the hospital bill was very high, Brother Athanase submitted it immediately via the extranet portal to apply for financial assistance, whilst also preparing an application for the Social Fund (submitted to his IMS Section), which the committee approved.

Recovery

The next step was to find the best facility where Brother Olivier could undergo a month of orthopaedic rehabilitation. Notre-Dame des Douleurs in Abus Dis was chosen as the destination, where the Sisters and their medical team provided 30 days of high-quality care at a much lower cost than in the private sector.

Dom Guillaume, Prior of Notre Dame de Latroun Abbey, highlighted “the care shown by the staff of EMI and MSH towards the most vulnerable, and in the service of life and human dignity”.

All’s well that ends well !

Thanks to the oversight of the Group Leader, Brother Athanase, the Abbey’s financial resources have been largely preserved and, above all, Brother Olivier received prompt and effective treatment.
