The International Missionary Benefit Society, which enables Major Superiors and Bishops to fulfil their canonical responsibility (C.619) towards their members in the area of health,celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025! A symposium on the theme of social protection around the world kicked off the anniversary celebrations on 27 November in Paris. The symposium featured high-quality presentations on health issues, particularly for religious workers: the unique opportunity offered by the IMS; the need to consider regional health issues and limited access to healthcare in West Africa; the importance of health for priests and bishops in the face of ageing and high healthcare costs; and an overview of global health challenges.
There is still a long way to go, given the constraints on the actions of governments and institutions. IMS therefore remains a solution for canonical authorities seeking health coverage for their members. Due to its unique nature, IMS will continue to support the most vulnerable through measures that work, such as reduced contributions and exceptional assistance.
